A Place of Darkness

"A Place of Darkness"
There is a place of darkness
a place that you will rue
a societal warehouse of lost souls
a whole world you never knew.
Steel bars, your freedom stripped away
you enter another world, your first prison stay.
A new chapter in your life, a ten-year sentence,
and it all begins on this very day.
The green walls echo with the cries of grown men
in the cold and desolate lair.
Whisperings of dreams of heartbreak and sorrow
almost too heavy of a burden to bear.
Shackles bind them as their spirits are confined
they will have to face adversity, nowhere to hide.
Yet secretly each man in his lonely cell
hope is still with him in the dark corners of his mind.
Days agonizingly blend into endless nights
as time dances to a tune of despair
every minute, every second, every hour,
wishing that you were anywhere but there.
What am I hearing from an inmate
in the cell right next to mine
assuring the new guy on the block
that everything will be just fine.
For even within the walls of prison
redemption never truly strays
to the convict that has learned about the Lord,
and falls on his knees and prays.
